A Toughbook CF-31 BIOS password can be recovered from the ROM you save yourself, on every mark from the original 2010 Mk1 to the final Mk6. The CF-31 is the most common machine to arrive here, because it was sold by the hundred thousand to police, utilities and the military, and a locked one turns up in every surplus lot.

Which CF-31 marks are covered
All of them. The Mk1 and Mk2 use older AMI firmware and usually need the Windows 7 tool, while the Mk3 through Mk6 read cleanly with the Windows 10 or Windows 11 tool. The mark is printed on the label under the battery as part of the model number, for example CF-31SBLCA1M for a Mk2 or CF-31WTLAXLM for a Mk5. In practice you do not need to know it, because you simply try the newest tool first and step down if it refuses to save. How Toughbook CF-31 BIOS password recovery works
The steps are the same as for every model. First, message through eBay and get the tools. Then boot into Windows, run the AMI tool as administrator, and click Save to extract the Toughbook BIOS ROM. Name the file after yourself, send it, and wait for the free review. Only after the ROM is approved do you buy, and then the original password is recovered from that exact image and sent back with a printed report. CF-31 quirks worth knowing
- Two passwords. The CF-31 can hold a supervisor password and a user password. Recovery returns what is stored in the ROM.
- The reset-button myth. Pulling the CMOS battery on a CF-31 does not clear the BIOS password, because Panasonic stores it in non-volatile memory. It only resets the clock.
- Fingerprint and smart-card logins are Windows features. They have nothing to do with the BIOS password and are not affected either way.

Why not flash a CF-31 BIOS instead?
Because a CF-31 with a failed flash is a very rugged paperweight. The board is hard to reach, the recovery jumper is undocumented, and a replacement image can wipe the serial and asset information that the machine’s owner needs.
