To extract your Toughbook BIOS ROM you need about five minutes, a machine that boots into Windows, and the right AMI tool for your Windows version. This guide shows the exact steps. The tool only reads your firmware and saves it to a file, so nothing on the machine changes.

Pick the tool that matches your Windows
After you message through eBay you receive a link to a tools folder with three subfolders. Each one holds a version of the AMI Firmware Update utility (AFUWIN) that suits a different generation of Toughbook. Try the newest first, and if it refuses to save, move down one.
- AMI-Windows-11: try this first on modern Toughbooks such as the CF-33, CF-54 and FZ-55.
- AMI-Windows-10: the older Aptio V tool, for machines a few years older.
- AMI-Windows-7: for the oldest machines, with a 32-bit tool inside for 32-bit Windows 7.
The folders are named after Windows versions because that is what most people know about their machine. In practice the real difference is the AMI firmware generation and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, but the naming works out the same in almost every case.
How to extract a Toughbook BIOS ROM in four clicks
- Boot the Toughbook normally into Windows and sign in.
- Open the matching tool folder. Right-click the AFUWIN program and choose Run as administrator. Prefer the file with GUI in its name if you want buttons instead of a command line.
- Choose Save (sometimes labelled Read or Backup) and save the file somewhere easy, such as the Desktop.
- Rename the file after yourself, for example
John_Smith.rom, and send it using the submission instructions.
That is the whole job. The tool needs administrator rights because reading the firmware chip is a privileged operation, and it needs Windows because the AMI driver runs inside it. This is also why a machine that never reaches Windows cannot be helped; see the note at the end.
Name the file after yourself
Every tool folder includes a readme with one rule in capital letters: name the ROM after yourself. A file called bios.rom or afuwin.rom cannot be matched to your order, and as a result it waits until someone works out whose it is. Your own name in the file name removes that delay entirely.
Mistakes that cost time

- Running the tool without administrator rights. It will fail to read the chip or save an empty file.
- Updating the BIOS after sending the ROM. Do not change the firmware while the file is under review, because the review is of that exact image.
- Sending a file smaller than expected. A Toughbook ROM is typically several megabytes. A tiny file means the read failed; try the next tool folder.

If the machine does not boot into Windows
