A Toughbook CF-53 BIOS password is recovered the same way as on every other Toughbook: from the ROM you save in Windows, with nothing flashed. The CF-53 is the semi-rugged 14-inch model sold from 2011 to 2016, and its four marks all use AMI firmware that the extraction tool reads without trouble.
CF-53 marks and which tool to use
The Mk1 and Mk2 shipped with Windows 7 and generally read with the Windows 7 tool, although many have since been upgraded to Windows 10 and work with the newer tool as well. The Mk3 and Mk4 read with the Windows 10 or Windows 11 tool. As always, start with the newest tool and move down one folder if it refuses to save the file. Toughbook CF-53 BIOS password recovery in practice
Message through eBay first. Then extract the ROM, name it after yourself, and send it in. It is reviewed free, and you buy only if recovery is possible. After purchase the original password comes back through eBay messages, followed by a printed Recovery Report in the mail. Because the ROM is read rather than written, your CF-53 keeps its firmware, serial and TPM exactly as they were. The Toughbook BIOS recovery process page lists all six steps.
Common CF-53 situations
- Fleet machines. Many CF-53s come out of utility and ambulance fleets with an IT-set supervisor password. If the fleet is gone, the password usually is too. That is fine as long as the machine is now yours; you may be asked how you came to have it.
- Locked boot order. A supervisor password often locks the boot menu, which is why you cannot boot from USB. Recovering it fixes that immediately.
- Machines that never reach Windows. Those cannot be read and cannot be helped this way, as explained in the boot password article.
